Concordia's History

The fomer Chief Justice of South Australia and then Grand Master of Freemasonry the MW Bro. Mr Justice Zelling aspired for Freemasonry to be enriched with ethnic lodges to mirror the diversity of Freemasonry and the diverse makeup of our State.

Out of this great vision, Lodge Concordia 226 on the Register of the Grand Lodge of Antient Free and Accepted Masons of South Australia and the Northern Territory Inc. was born, being consecreated on 21 February 1981.

Lodge Concordia was from its outset a 'German' lodge and W. Bro Franz Mosler its Foundation Master together with 41 Brethren had successfully petitioned for the lodge to be formed under the sponsorship of another most prominent ethnic lodge, Lodge Kilwinning.

A German Lodge existing in the city which bears the name of a German Queen (Adelaide) required an extraordinary ritual (philosophical set of ceremonies). Hence W. Bro. Sydler, who had lead the earlier establishment of the 'Association of German Speaking Freemasons in South Australia' was tasked with travelling to Germany to find and chose the appropriate ancient German ritual of Freemasonry. He returned with the 'Schroeder Ritual', which today remains the hallmark of difference to our lodge.
